Internship Funding

Funding for Unpaid Internships: Summer 2024

Grant funding is available for full-time summer internships that:

  • Are approved for academic course credit
  • Are unpaid by the employer
    • Supplemental funding is available for internships that are paid by the employer, when the pay rate is not sufficient to cover expenses at the specified level, or for internships that are only partially funded by other programs (i.e. Bonner Scholars, EPG, etc.)
  • Provide 300-400 total work hours within a period of 8-10 consecutive weeks. Interns are expected to work the dates and number of hours specified by the employer.

The level of funding is determined by the type of internship (in-person or remote) and the city/area (in the contiguous states) where it is located. The amounts are sufficient to generously cover the typical costs of roundtrip travel, housing, commuting, meals, and personal expenses for 8-10 weeks. Adjustments to the first deposit will be made for airfare or other expenses as determined to be necessary by staff. The student’s summer EFC (expected family contribution) will be deducted from the amount of the grant, and funding will also be adjusted to include payments from other sources, such as employer compensation. Internships under existing program agreements will be funded according to the agreement in place (i.e. Shepherd Internship Program, Aspirnaut and Pipeline Internship Programs, Medicine for the Greater Good, and others).

The Internship Program staff will create a DocuSign Funding Request Form during the final meeting. The total amount of the student’s estimated expenses should be less than or equal to the level of funding specified for the type of internship and geographic area. Students may use this Internship Budget Form as a tool for their use in preparation for their final meeting, but it is not to be submitted.

The First Deposit occurs approximately 2 weeks after the final approval meeting with Internship Program staff. The Second Deposit is provided to continuing students in mid-August upon successful completion; successful completion assumes all internship program requirements are met and a grade of A, B, or C is awarded; amount may be adjusted based on available funds.
