Title: Community Safety Fellow
Duration: 6-12 months
Work Hours: 20 hours per week; Some weekends/evenings
Pay: $16.65/hour
ABOUT THE OFFICE FOR SAFE AND HEALTHY NEIGHBOHOODS:
The office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods (OSHN) is the only office in Louisville Metro Government established out of community concern. Founded in 2013 after a tragic triple homicide, OSHN has been at the forefront of community violence interventions for more than ten years. Today, OSHN aims to reduce gun violence in Louisville through a host of interventions including civic engagement, mental health, youth involvement, targeted case management, and a public health approach to gun violence prevention.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Under general supervision, interns will:
- Promote the program’s civic engagement opportunities though tabling events and the distribution of digital or in-person communications;
- Work with neighborhood stakeholders to identify assets and barriers, fill service gaps, and strengthen existing resources;
- Organize, schedule and assist in coordinating community mobilization initiative events and activities while representing OSHN at community meetings on an ongoing basis;
- Performs administrative tasks that assist in community engagement efforts including responding to citizen requests, inputting and analyzing data, and the day-to-day administrative needs of hosting and organizing public events;
- Performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)
- Builds and maintains relations with internal and external stakeholders through periodic tabling and volunteer opportunities in priority-service neighborhoods;
- Prepares, reports, and maintains meeting notes at public meetings;
- Researches emerging violence prevention initiatives and builds partnerships with neighborhood stakeholders for the purpose of executing neighborhood goals;
- Assists in the distribution of supplies purchased for violence prevention interventions and works with data partners to inform strategy for placement;
- Works with department and communications coordinator to draft flyers, newsletters, and promote neighborhood events and initiatives
- Assists in the planning and implementation of OSHN community events in priority-service neighborhoods including Night of Remembrance and annual Safe Summer Kickoff
- Uses computer applications such as excel, word processing, Outlook, GovDelivery, Wufoo, and other database software in performing work assignments.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Interns must currently possess the following competencies:
- Can effectively use computer applications such as excel, word processing, calendar, e-mail and related software;
- Reads, writes, understands, and communicates in English sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position;
- Has emotional maturity; good judgment; integrity; tolerance of differing points of view and beliefs;
- Must be well-organized and capable of scheduling and tracking multiple tasks at once;
- Must be in adequate physical condition to perform duties of the position.
Interns can expect to learn the following competencies:
- Knowledge of root cause issues that lead to violence
- Knowledge of community partners and leaders working in violence prevention field;
- Knowledge of local drivers of violence, data, and trends;
- Familiarity with civic meeting decorum including chair responsibilities, by-laws, and voting;
- Familiarity with the public health approach to violence;
- Familiarity with health and social problems and attitudes in the community;
- An increased understanding of local government
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Internship is available to students at Berea College enrolled as a full or part-time student.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid driver’s license maintained throughout employment is required.
