Overview:
This internship focuses on enhancing the accessibility and organization of the Appalachian Media Institute’s catalog of youth-created films from 1988 onward. The intern will generate and standardize film descriptions, as well as review and verify the accuracy of caption files to ensure the catalog is comprehensive and accessible.
Key Responsibilities:

Film Description Generation and Standardization:
- Watch AMI films from 1988 onward that lack descriptions and create concise, engaging summaries.
- Review and reformat existing descriptions to ensure consistency and clarity across the catalog.

Caption Review and Accuracy:
- Review provided caption files for a selection of AMI films, ensuring the captions accurately reflect the spoken content.
- Correct discrepancies in timing, phrasing, and accuracy to meet accessibility standards.

Catalog Enhancement:
- Organize and track completed films, noting which have been reviewed and which still require descriptions or caption checks.
- Maintain a running list of updated film descriptions and caption reviews for archival purposes.

Progress and Reporting:
- Assess 3-4 films per week, completing descriptions and caption reviews.
- Track all work through Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets, with regular updates provided to the program manager.
Skills Developed:
- Media Description and Summarization – Develop skills in crafting concise and informative film descriptions.
- Attention to Detail – Gain experience in reviewing and refining captions to meet high standards of accuracy.
- Content Organization – Learn to manage and categorize multimedia content for digital archives.
Ideal Candidate:
- Strong writing and summarization skills with an interest in film, media accessibility, and youth storytelling.
- Ability to watch and critically engage with documentary and short films.
- Comfortable working independently on long-term projects.
- Basic technical skills, with the ability to use Google Drive and word processing tools.
Project Examples:
- Generate descriptions for AMI films highlighting youth perspectives on social justice, environmental issues, and Appalachian identity.
- Review and correct captions for documentaries exploring local communities and personal narratives.
- Standardize descriptions for films in AMI’s catalog to ensure consistency in tone and format.
Format: Hybrid or fully virtual, depending on intern needs. A reliable laptop or desktop with internet access is required. Film editing skills are not necessary.
Supervision: Weekly meetings with the AMI Program Manager (in person or virtual).
