Gap Year / Service-Oriented Experiences for May Grads to Consider

Many graduates choose to spend a year gaining professional experience through service programs, fellowships, or international opportunities. The programs below represent a starting point for exploring structured gap-year options.

National Service Programs

Important Update: AmeriCorps

  • The AmeriCorps website is currently undergoing renovation. Some program listings may be temporarily unavailable while the system is updated. Students interested in national service should continue monitoring the site for updates.

City Year AmeriCorps Program (Service Year)

  • Full-time, 11-month service commitment (typically late July/August start through the following June) helping students in high-need schools.
  • Deadlines for applications generally occur in early spring (e.g., March & May) for the following service year, so graduating seniors can apply now or soon.

Teach For America (TFA)

  • Two-year teaching commitment in under-resourced schools — blends service with an education career pathway.
  • Multiple application deadlines through March 2026; seniors graduating in May can apply now for fall placements.

International Service & Gap Programs

Peace Corps

  • Two-year service abroad focused on community-led initiatives across sectors (education, health, environment, etc.).
  • Applications are open year-round; the application process can take several months, so starting applications soon after graduation is practical.
  • Programs include standard Peace Corps, Peace Corps Response (shorter-term, experienced roles), and virtual service pilots.

GoinGlobal (Available through BeyondBerea)

  • Country Career Guides provide location-specific information on international job searching, salary expectations, industry trends, work visas, and networking resources.
  • Includes more than 100,000 resources for international employment opportunities.

Structured Gap Year Programs Abroad

  • Organizations like Projects Abroad and International Volunteer HQ offer multi-week to year-long service learning and volunteer programs abroad (teaching, conservation, health, community projects).
  • Flexible durations (4 weeks–12+ months), often ideal for students taking a deliberate gap year to serve while exploring global cultures.

Gap Year Service Providers (Custom & Shorter Term)

  • Gap year placement organizations (e.g., CIEE, Avodah, FoodCorps) combine service with cultural or skill development experiences.
  • Some are domestic; others include international immersions — many open for 2026 placements now.

Other High-Impact Service or Career-Bridging Programs

NYC Civic Corps

  • Service program based in New York City (focused on community development, education, health).
  • Offers living allowances and professional experience — some terms run Oct–July.

Green Corps

  • One-year grassroots environmental organizing program training recent graduates in community advocacy.

Outward Bound

  • A non-profit educational organization that provides experiential, wilderness-based adventure programs designed to foster personal growth, resilience, leadership, and compassion in individuals of all ages.

Conservation Corps / Environmental Service

These are very popular with gap-year students and often provide stipends and housing.

Project or Fellowship Programs

  • Gap year fellowships like Blueprint Schools Network, Change Corps, community health gap fellowships, etc., provide structured professional service placements for a year.

Tips for Students

Apply broadly and early — many service programs operate on rolling admissions.

Explore different types of experiences — consider domestic service, international programs, or professional fellowships.

Research each opportunity carefully — prioritize programs that provide stipends, housing, or education awards rather than requiring high participation fees.

Use available application resources — many programs offer webinars, alumni connections, and preparation guides.

Be flexible with start dates — some programs begin mid-summer, while others start in fall 2026 or early 2027.

3 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Gap Year Program

1. What skills or experience will I gain?

Choose programs that help you build meaningful skills such as leadership, research, teaching, community engagement, or technical abilities. A strong gap experience should contribute to your professional development and strengthen your resume, graduate school applications, or career goals.

2. What are the financial realities of the program?

Understand the full financial picture before committing. Some reputable programs provide stipends, housing, or education awards, while others charge participation fees. Consider the total cost of living, travel, and program fees to determine whether the opportunity is financially sustainable.

3. What support and outcomes does the program provide?

Look for programs that offer structured supervision, training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. It’s also helpful to review alumni outcomes—such as graduate school placements, career pathways, or networking opportunities that come from participation.

Final tip:
When possible, read reviews and/or speak with past participants before applying. Their experiences can provide valuable insight into the program’s culture, workload, and long-term benefits.
